Description

Well it's about time I finished this! So yeah, here's that sketch of Lugnut I started a while back and never got to finishing until a few nights ago.

This is the "Reveal the Shield" Voyager Lugnut toy in Transformers Animated style. I didn't add the big tail fin on his back cuz it was kinda annoying and kibbly and I made him bulky like how he appears in the show. Now I wish we could have a RtS Lockdown or an RtS Bulkhead! :D

Not too bad I guess. Lineart is ok, the coloring and shading and reflections on him that give him a more shiny metal look turned out beautiful! And through doing this, I learned more helpful tricks in SAI that will come in handy in the future! So I guess sooner or later I'll be trying my hardest to use it more often...

One of my better pics that I actually take the effort to make in Paint Tool Sai so please give a critique if you don't mind. :)

Wow, you know a Decipticon is dedicated when he taunts the Autobots by using their logo as a codpiece. <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/r/r…" width="15" height="15" alt="=p" title="=p (Razz)"/> Okay, maybe I'm seeing something that's not really there.

As for a critique I can't say much about the design itself (since I haven't seen the figures and Google Images wasn't much help), and I'm sure as you look at it the unsteady lines, bent right gun, and other stuff it all stands out more to you. Now, if you tell me you drew this using a mouse then my mind will be blown; if it's a tablet then I sense hesitation in your strokes, so practice longer strokes and curves; do warm-ups before drawing.

For the most part I think you did a very good job on the perspectives, especially the engines' relative angles and the foreshortening of his left arm and leg. One thing that sticks out is the proportions of his legs and toes, most noticeable because of how much his left toes are spread. Of course, the way you have his feet at different angles as he hunkers a bit is natural, so maybe the stance requires it. Also, the Decipticon logo looks uneven to me, which seems to face us yet be uneven. I think it shouldn't be so level with us but tilted more to match how he's facing (and perhaps the vertical curve).

The shading looks good and mostly consistent with the lighting. I do like the light use of those metallic reflections though a few seem to come out of nowhere considering the light source. I don't deny that light can reflect off exposed areas or other background objects to give the shaded parts some luster, so maybe I'd need more detailed study.

His turbines are very cool, and I'm pretty sure the straight lines at the edge of the blades was meant to show that the fins are overlapping, but instead the effect is that the blades are closed/shuttered. Seeing what you've done so far, I think it wouldn't take long for you to get the hang of those with some life/reference drawing. (All of the professional artists I've known and studied, whether commercial or cartoon or simple comic styles, say that life drawing does the most to build their skills and keep them sharp.)

Take all of this with a grain of energon though, and definitely don't be discouraged by the low numbers since I'm rating against what's in my spectacular collection. You did a very fine job on this, and from several of your other pieces I know you have a knack for some great detailing, though you just need practice and polishing of your techniques.
